First off, stay far far away from everyone trying to pitch stuff for you to sell, or affiliate marketing programs, or anyone or any business that claims they can get you thousands of hits per day in just a few days (or a few hours).
The most important things to get traffic are having lots of relevant content, updates regularly and links from other sites. All of this takes tons of patience and time though, so don’t expect to see results in the first couple of weeks, especially if you are doing it all yourself (for free).
Start with these ideas:
1.) Get links from other sites to your site. Make sure the sites that link to you are relevant with similar or complimentary content or services.
2.) Start to join free directory sites (that let you create a profile for your business and a hyperlink to your site), like http://www.whyabe.com
3.) Promote your company on http://craigslist.org (if it is free in your area).
4.) Make sure your site is optimized for search engines (look at your keyword density, alt and picture tags, and your meta-tags).
5.) Use free tools like the search engine submission and SEO (search engine optimization) at sites like http://www.submitexpress.com
6.) Consider starting a blog on your site, that provides fresh content at least a few times a week (perhaps on tips relevant to how to do your business.). Or even a blog to advertise sales or promotions, – the idea is to get your existing traffic to keep coming back.
7.) Get lots of text content on your site. Search engines (like google, bing and yahoo) cannot index pictures. They need to read text in order to know what your site is all about.
Just remember, it takes a lot of work to get traffic to your site, and it can take a long time. Don’t expect the things you do now to have immediate impact, it is the cumulative total of everything you do over time.
